David Lance Goines created Thirty Recipes Suitable for Framing in 1968, the same year he established Saint Hieronymus Press in North Berkeley. For the series, he designed the distinctive italic lettering used for the recipes and created the illustrations that accompany them, drawing on the Arts and Crafts tradition and his own emerging graphic style. The thirty prints are an early example of the combination of typography, illustration and hand production that would become characteristic of his work.

Alice Waters &
Chez Panisse
— Before the Restaurant
Alice Waters wrote and compiled the recipes several years before opening Chez Panisse in Berkeley in 1971. They already reflect ideas that would later become closely associated with the restaurant: straightforward preparation, fresh ingredients and an emphasis on seasonal food. Chez Panisse went on to become internationally influential in the development of California cuisine and the farm-to-table movement, giving these early recipes a distinctive place in Berkeley’s culinary history.

How the collection is framed.
All thirty recipes are framed to the same specifications, using a stained poplar moulding, archival matting and backing, and Optium Museum Acrylic®. The diagram above shows a cross section of the framing package and its individual components. The frame dimensions vary with the proportions of each recipe, while the materials and construction remain consistent throughout the set.
