Born below the slopes of Mount Tamalpais in Mill Valley, CA, the rugged scenery of Marin County and the Northern California coast shaped artist Tom Killion's artistic vision. Killion’s distinctive printmaking style, combining linocut, woodcut, and letterpress techniques, has garnered him international recognition. His artwork is strongly influenced by traditional Japanese Ukiyo-ë style, particularly the works of masters like Hokusai and Hiroshige. However, Killion's technique differs from traditional Japanese woodblock printing as he uses oil-based inks, linoleum block, and a printing press.
Killion's artistic process is labor-intensive and deliberate. He often spends months working on a single print, re-carving the key block and isolating sections that will be inked in different colors. This meticulous approach results in arresting compositions of electric colors and intricate botanic and topographic detail that have become immediately recognizable to anyone familiar with Northern California landscapes.
